"Defense" of marriage

I'm rather sick of the whole "defense" of marriage schtick as it is, what with a 50% divorce rate embedded in our social consciousness well before anyone thought about "non-traditional" marriages in any context, let alone in the context of civil rights.

Where were the religious right when divorce began to skyrocket? Were they perhaps too busy having their own divorces to bother with it?

Inquiring minds would like to know.

Comments:
I agree with you. Marriage was in peril decades before the whole gay marriage thing became notable.

I agree with you about the divorce rate among Christians, too. Simply put, We Should Know Better. The rate even among the more devout sects does not make a good example of following Jesus's teachings on divorce. And that does trouble me.
